El nuevo contrato de Alfonso Soriano...
...es un disparate...
A primera vista, hacerse del (discutiblemente) más importante de los agentes libres de este año es un triunfo para los Cachorros de Chicago. Adicionalmente, con el bate de Alfonso Soriano sumándose a los de Derrek Lee y el también Dominicano Aramis Ramírez, los Oseznos pasan a ser considerados unos de los principales candidatos a llevarse el título de la División Central de la Liga Nacional (siempre y cuando mejoren el pitcheo, porque solo con Carlos Zambrano nadie queda campeón)
Soriano viene de tener su mejor campaña en las Mayores, habiéndose convertido en el cuarto pelotero en conectar 40 jonrones y robar 40 bases en un mismo año, por lo que además del poder, le estaría dando a los Cachorros otro jugador además de Juan Pierre capaz de robar 30 almohadillas, haciendo del equipo una unidad más agresiva y peligrosa ofensivamente
Pero si uno se detiene a pensar por un momento y saca una cuenta simple y rápida, notará que hay algo que no suena tan bueno para el equipo de la ciudad de los vientos: Soriano arrancará el 2007 con 31 años de edad y el contrato es por 8 años, con lo que lo "arropará" hasta que cumpla los 38. El contrato es por $136 millones, o lo que es lo mismo, $17 millones por año...
...levanten la mano los que con gusto pagarían $17 millones a un jugador de 38 años...
No se ven muchas manos levantadas...
Me parece sobradamente tonto haber firmado a este pelotero por un período tan largo, principalmente porque resulta absurdo amarrarse a un solo jugador por tanto tiempo y a tan alto precio -- si hasta los contratos de Alex Rodríguez y Manny Ramírez han sido problemáticos, y esos dos peloteros son considerablemente mejores que Soriano
Por otra parte, aún cuando no sabemos si Soriano tendrá otras temporadas iguales (o mejores) que la del 2006, las probabilidades están a favor de que ocurra lo contrario: que la pasada haya sido su mejor campaña, su career year. Si esto es así, los Cachorros estarán sobre-pagando de una manera increíble
En el 2006 Soriano sumó 30 WS, la cantidad más alta de su carrera (tanto en el 2005 como en el 2004 tuvo 16), y tuvo 16 WSAB (Win Shares Above Bench - una estadística que nos dice qué tan mejor fue que un jugador de banca de la misma posición). Este último número opaca los 4 y 5 que tuvo en el 2005 y 2004, respectivamente
Suponiendo que Soriano no volverá a ser igual que bueno como en el 2006, pero no será tan "malo" como en el 2004 ó 2005, sino que se encontrará en algún lugar intermedio, podemos estimar entonces que su producción del 2007, 2008 y 2009 rondaría los 21 WS y 8 WSAB por año
(Un paréntesis: para comodidad del análisis asumo que sus próximas tres temporadas serán del mismo nivel de producción y que su declive comenzará a los 34 años, en el 2010)
Tomando como base ese salario de $17 millones en promedio (que no necesariamente estará estructurado de esta forma), tendríamos entonces que cada Win Share de Soriano estaría costándole al equipo $822.580, y que cada WSAB costaría $2.040.000. Para ponerlos en contexto y mostrar cuan costoso resulta Soriano, veamos algunos peloteros comparables:

Quizás contar aquí a Miguel Cabrera no sea lo mejor, dado a que su situación es distinta a los demás del grupo, pero dado que en un par de años se convertirá en agente libre, me pareció interesante tomarlo en cuenta para ver cuánto pudiera costar según lo que pudiera estar ganando en promedio
Los demás del grupo sí son perfectamente comparables: Alex Rodríguez, es el pelotero más caro de la historia; Carlos Beltrán fue el "Soriano del 2005", ya que consiguió un contrato de muchos años por más de $100 millones; Andruw Jones será agente libre próximamente; Bob Abreu tiene un salario similar y es otro jardinero que combina poder y velocidad, y Carlos Lee es ahora el mejor agente libre disponible luego de la firma de Soriano
Si notan, el costo por WS y por WSAB de Soriano es considerablemente más alto que el de los demás...y eso es utilizando como factores de división a los valores esperados más altos que tendrá en la duración de su contrato. Si la actuación del Dominicano es peor que el promedio de sus tres últimas campañas, este contrato será un terrible error para la dirigencia de Chicago, con cada WS costando más de $1.200.000 (ni siquiera A-Rod cuesta tanto)
El contrato entre Chicago y Soriano es positivo para el equipo desde el punto de vista de agregar a un excelente pelotero al line-up y casi de automático los pone como contendores, pero resulta terriblemente negativo desde el punto de vista financiero, ya que aún cuando el jardinero ayudará a la divisa, nunca lo hará lo suficiente como para justificar un monto tan elevado por un período tan prolongado...
Adicionalmente, si Soriano gana $17 millones al año, Lee puede pedir algo parecido, y así comenzaremos a ver otros contratos sobrevaluados absurdamente

Esto es verdad ni siquiera arod cuesta tanto. Y actualmente Vladimir Guerrero es mejor jugador que Alfonso Soriano y no gana tanto dinero........Y esto es sin agregarles que Vladimir no sabe ingles, osea que no tiene ayuda de nadie en lo emocional para que lo aliente, pero al contrario Alfonso Soriano si........Eso es un contrato absurdo
